AK Steel & Community Service
Launched in 2016, the AK CARES Program was created to encourage employees to give back to their community through a variety of volunteer efforts. Through the program, employees donate countless hours to local charitable efforts to help show that AK CARES about our neighbors and our region. Employees share their time and talent at food banks, schools, health and human service organizations and other agencies supporting needs in their local community.
In 2018, more than 1,200 employees volunteered for over 100 nonprofit activities, giving more than 3,200 hours to community service projects.
Annual Souper Bowl Food Drive Supports Neighbors in Need
Each year, employees across each site join together to make a difference in our communities through the annual AK Steel Souper Bowl Food Drive. Each location hosts a food collection drive to support a local pantry in their community. In 2019, employees donated more than 20 tons or 40,000 pounds of food.
